A hike in the Golden Gate National Park
Echo Ravine is a 2.3 kilometre moderate trail in Golden Gate ; Free State, South Africa. It runs along a river, past beautiful viewpoints and there are beautiful wildflowers and often wildlife to see. Due to the gradient and distance, the trail is classified as moderate. It is an excellent place to hike and walk.
Afterwards we drove through the NP and the surroundings were really beautiful. Especially now that everything is slowly blooming.
The Golden Gate Highlands National Park at the foot of the Maluti Mountains is one of the highlights of the Free State. The main attraction of the national park are the massive, colourful sandstone formations and natural rock sculptures, which glow golden yellow especially in the evening light and gave the park its name. The numerous caves in the sandstone rocks were once used by bushmen as shelters. Many well-preserved cave drawings bear witness to this. During the Boer War, Boer families hid here to escape the British concentration camps.
Hiking trails lead through the tranquil mountain world, there are more than 50 different grass species and the park is 11,600 hectares and consists mainly of the original grasslands. You can see mountain zebra, eland, springbok, blesbok, oribis and wildebeest. There is also a diverse bird life
